I have to write about this....

Sorry to have 2 hockey-related blogs in 2 days but this is something I have to write about.

Today the Ottawa Senators fired their head coach, John Paddock.

You can hear the collective cheer from the city of Ottawa if you listen closely.

I'll be honest - I NEVER liked Paddock as a head coach.

He got the job because Bryan Murray, the head coach last season, got promoted to General Manager. Rather then go out and hire a replacement, Murray promoted the next in line. Now I will admit Paddock paid his dues and earned his promotion. He'd been coaching for sometime and had been in the Senators organization for 6 years. He had amazing success as head coach of the Senators AHL team in Binghamton. However, the troubling thing was he had a very bad record as an NHL head coach...and hadn't been a head coach in the big league in like 17 years. Yea...it's a MUCH different game these days.

Bryan Murray led the team to the Stanley Cup last year after he turned them around when they were in a major slump. Paddock had that opportunity all season and couldn't take advantage of it. He lost control of his team and they stopped playing for him.

He mishandled the situation with Ray Emery. That was strike one. He instituted a "Win and You're In" policy for his goaltenders - that backfired - Strike two. This past weekend players told the media they no longer respected him and that became evident after back-to-back shutout losses to Toronto and Boston, two of the NHL's basement dwellers - Strike Three.

Let's face it. Paddock wasn't a favorite of the media either. He never smiled. He always seemed grumpy. He never really seemed to give a damn at any press events. He just seemed to be a jerk. At least Leafs coach Paul Maurice can lighten the mood and make an attempt at humor every now and then. Paddock seemed like a guy who'd rather sit in a dentist's chair for 6 hours then make a joke.

Some Sens fans were upset that Ottawa failed to make any blockbuster moves during yesterday's trade deadline. Firing Paddock WAS the move. It was the ultimate low-risk, high-reward move the Sens needed to make. Things will get better, no question....because under Paddock they couldn't get much worse.

I'M NOT ALONE ANYMORE!

I'm proud to report I'm no longer the only radio personality on the Herbal One program.

Ric Johnson who does morning news for Energy 99.3 and our sister station Country 105 has joined me on the program.

Some of the staff here think Ric and I should make this a competition. I don't agree though. I'd really hate to embarrass him like that - he's such a nice guy! Actually, Ric brings some age to the table. I not sure how old he is exactly but he always tells stories about the days when he was a kid and the telephone hadn't been invented yet...just kidding Ric!

Ric's blog is now online at http://rictalk.blogspot.com

In the meantime there isn't much new for me to report from Herbal One.

I was in to the centre today to get weighed and I'm down a quarter of a pound since Monday. Maybe I'd be a little lighter if I hadn't had so many beers to drink on Monday night. I have a good excuse, my Sens lost 5-0 to the Leafs and I had to try to drink away the embarrassment. It didn't work unfortunately!

More updates coming soon!

THE best day of the year....PERIOD...

Today is my favorite day of the year....

Today is NHL trade-deadline day.

This is a day I eagerly anticipate weeks in advance, much like I used to excitedly look froward to Christmas as a child. I'm even writing this at 1am on deadline day because I'm so excited I can't sleep!

Yes, it had to happen soon or later - I'd write a blog entry about hockey.

I owe my career as a broadcaster to hockey. In fact, I was once even lucky enough to be a reporter covering the Ottawa Senators. I'm sure my future as a broadcaster will involve hockey in some way (Don Cherry has to retire sometime!) In the meantime though, a guy can dream and write about hockey on his blog.

To me, NHL trade deadline day is the single most exciting day of the year. It's like Christmas, New Year's, my birthday, May 2-4 weekend, Canada Day and Labour Day all rolled into one. Yes...I'm THAT much of a loser to think that. It's also a sad scene that the NHL trade deadline is the most exciting time for fans like me. That's how bad the game has gotten....are you taking notes, Gary Bettman?

In a few hours I'll be glued to TSN and I won't be shutting off the TV until after the deadline has passed at 5pm. I'll be there every step of the way, listening to in-depth analysis of simple trades and waiting to be the first to find out about the blockbuster deals that can make or break a team. I'll also be wondering if I punch the TV hard enough will Pierre McGuire feel it? How bout that Monster Performance, Pierre?
Many questions get answered on deadline day. Which teams are buyers? Which teams are sellers? Who's best suited for a run at the cup? What golf course will the Leafs be playing at while the good teams are still playing in April? Yep....all key questions.

OK, I admit it...I'm a little TOO serious about this. I know my conversations during deadline day will be like this:
ME: "Hey Bill, did you hear (this team) just traded (this guy) to (that team) for all these draft picks?"
Bill Porter: "Dude, it's 3am...get a life"

In all seriousness the only thing I truly hope for is that my team, Ottawa, makes smart moves today that will put them in a position to be competitive yet again for the Stanley Cup but at the same time not completely damage their chance of being competitive in the future.

I'm also hopeful I'll receive a call later today from Bryan Murry, GM of the Senators asking me if I'd like to play left-wing on the 4th line....I somehow don't see that happening either.

I hope you've enjoyed this all-hockey blog. If you read this far, I'm sure you have. If not, then I'm sure you agree I need help and that James Duthie should really have the restraining order bumped up to 500 feet.

WEEK 7 RESULTS!!!

It looks like I'm starting to be a little more "average".

The average person will lose around two pounds per week on the Herbal One program. I've been losing an average of five per week, which was bordering on freak-ish. This week I lost just over two pounds...that brings the 7-week total to nearly 33 pounds lost. As long as things stay on track I'll be half-way to my goal weight by next Monday's weigh-in.

I also got measured again today and I'm happy to report I've lost another 5.5 inches in the last two weeks. That brings the total to 44-inches lost since I began my program on January 7th.

Once again, for those of you who are interested in joining Herbal One the best thing to do is book a consultation with the centre. I've been getting a ton of e-mails asking me about the cost of the program. It all depends on which program is right for you...and because I'm not qualified to give anyone a consultation I can't give anyone a price...sorry!

I can tell you that the special offer of $1 per week has been extended. If you have a lot of weight to lose and sign up for the full program, the weight-loss portion will only cost you $1 per week. Normally it costs $20 per week...so if you have a lot of weight to lose then this is a great deal for you. You also get a free starter package that includes all the initial supplements and more...that's worth $160 and you're getting it free. If you're hoping to drop 10-20 pounds you can still get the 10-week program for only $249. In any case, contact Herbal One at 748-9999....remember the consultation is free and if you don't like what you hear you don't have to sign up. It's easy!

More updates coming this week!

HERBAL ONE WEEK 6 RESULTS!!!

"Are you kidding me???"

That's what I said this morning when I stepped on the scale at Herbal One.

Somehow I managed to lose another 5 pounds this week.

What make's this unbelievable, to me, is the fact I didn't play hockey once this week...I usually play three times a week. I did try to make up for it by taking a skate on the Rideau Canal on Saturday and I took the dog for a walk last night - but that's hardly the amount of activity I'm used to. I also had dinner out twice this week...although I did stick to the program in the process.

So I'm left with two conclusions: Either the program works or I'm just a freak of nature when it comes to weight loss. As freaky as I am...I'm going to say the program works.

I know at this point and I've said it before everyone is different and everyone will lose weight differently. Because I'm young and active, my progress is better than most. In fact after 6 weeks my weight loss totals could be around 12 pounds. Thanks to my lifestyle and sticking to the program I've lost 30 pounds in only 6 weeks.

I don't expect to keep my 5-pounds-per-week average for much longer. I know it's going to slow down soon and I'm prepared for that to happen. Be it 5 pounds or only 2 pounds in a week - it's still gone and that's all that matters to me.

I was talking to Jan at Herbal One and they have another great offer for those of you who want to sign up for the full program. Normally, the weightloss part of the program costs $20 per week. If you sign up now it'll only cost you $1 per week. If you're like me and want to lose a large amount and need to be on the program for a while - that's a HUGE savings. Also, the first 10 people to sign up get the starter package for free, and that's worth $160.

As always you can contact Herbal One to book a free consultation at 748-9999. If you have any questions for me about the program and my experience you can e-mail me at jc.coutts@chumkawartha.ca

Will video kill the radio star???

Folks, get ready to set whatever recording device you own.

This week I get to make a couple of apperences on TV Cogeco and I'm hoping you'll be tuning in.

On Wednesday night I'll be hosting Insight & Information, a call-in show that will focus on the Peterborough Petes. My guests for the show include Pete's players Brett Theberge, Jake LaPlante, Trevor Cann and assistant coach Darren Keily.

The show is on live at 8pm on TV Cogeco, Cable 10. Feel free to call in if you have any questions for the guests.

On Thursday night the Petes are hosting the Kitchener Rangers and I'll be hosting the game and providing colour-commentary. You can catch the game live beginning at 7pm on TV Cogeco.

This isn't my first time on TV. I had the oppurtunity to host Insight & Information a few months back and I'm looking forward to working with another great lineup of guests. This won't be my first hockey game, but it is my first at the OHL level and my first as a colour-commentator. Im a play-by-play announcer by trade so this is going to be a whole new challenge and I'm really looking forward to it.

Hopefully you'll be able to tune in...and hopefully I can prove some people wrong about that whole "face for radio" thing, ha-ha!

This beagle is no Snoopy...

I was surprised recently to see a beagle win the award of "Best in Show" at the prestigous Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York.

I own a beagle myself and I somehow don't see it picking up any "Best In Show" awards in the near future.

Molly, as we call her, is about 7 months old. We bought her when we arrived in Peterborough back in September.

There have been a lot of growing pains raising a puppy. We think she's finally house-broken now....which is great news. I still think it's going to cost me thousands to re-carpet the place. But she's just so damn cute that you can't get rid of her.

Like last night for example...she somehow chewed through her blanket, then got her head stuck in the hole. Check out this and tell me your heart dosen't melt....

There's something to brighten up your work day!

Herbal One Week 6 update is coming later today!

No, Herbal One will not buy you new pants...

So this week I finally had to give in and buy some new pants.

Thanks to Herbal One, alot of clothes no longer fit, so it was time to get some new ones that do.

So this week I made a trip to Old Navy to get some new jeans and a couple shirts. I don't want to go too crazy on the new clothes shopping just yet since I still have a long way to go before I reach my goal. But as anyone who's ever had to buy smaller clothes will tell you - it's a good feeling.

On Wednesday night Bill Porter and I got to DJ the semi-formal at Thomas A. Stewart Secondary. We had a great time and so did the kids. I learned two things....1) Bill is an INSANE DJ. - Seriously, the dude was on fire. Still can't dance though....2) High school is WAYYYY different then it was when I was in high-school...and that was only five years ago!!! Times sure do change!

And finally, I survived all the chocolate and food that comes with Valetine's Day. It was a great start to the day when my boss, Brian Young, decided it'd be funny to try to sell me chocolate to support his daughters school. I did buy some...but not for myself! Also I'd like to thank the fine folks at Boston Pizza on Lansdowne for brining by some heart-shaped pizzas...they were enjoyed by the Energy staff....all except me. I opted for a Chicken Pita from the Souvlaki Pit instead. At this point even I'm amazed at my own will-power.

One last thing, a quick little rant.

Folks, I know we've had some snow this winter. I know it's getting a little insane and I know you're fed up with shovelling at this point but please for the love of god, BRUSH OFF YOUR DAMN CARS!!!

Here's the problem. People are driving around town after a night of snow without having properly cleaned their vehicles. Besides being UNSAFE, this is also ILLEGAL.

Wednesday morning I was driving down Lansdowne and on two seperate occasions I almost witnessed collisions due to the same reason (I call them "collisions" by the way, since saying "accident" implies there's no one at fault). The reason was is that the person, due to either laziness or just outright stupidity, had not cleared off their rear tail-lights. This means other drivers don't know when you're turning or changing lanes and don't know when you're stopping because they can't see your brake lights.

So please, when it snows....clear off your vehicle. Windows, mirrors, headlights and rear lights. And yes, the roof too.

Hopefully that's the nastiest I'll ever have to get on this blog!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Trailer

I've been waiting for this one for a while now. Last summer it was Transformers, this summer it's all about Indy. Can't wait till May 22nd!

WEEK 5 RESULTS!!!

If I'd known it was going to be this easy and this successful I would have signed up for this a long time ago.

It seemed like it was going to be a slow week for me but somehow I keep losing weight at an amazing pace.

Because I stuck to the program and didn't give into any temptation (as noted in my previous blog entry) I was able to drop just over 4 pounds in the past week.

That brings my 5 week total on the Herbal One program to just over 25 pounds lost. My "inches- lost" figure has also increased to just over 38-inches lost in 5 weeks.

Jan at Herbal One attributes my success to the fact that I stick to the program in addition to having a active lifestyle.

Some keys to remember are:
  • I'm sticking to the program. This means going in to the Herbal One centre three times per week. It means taking the all my supplements and sticking to my meal plan.
  • I'm not starving myself. Some people may think I must be eating next to nothing to accomplish these results - that would be wrong. It would be extremely unhealthy and dangerous. That's why I stick to the program and get monitored by the staff at Herbal One. Trust me - I get more than enough to eat - it's just much healthier than what I used to eat!
  • I'm active. I play sports and attend events for work. I'm always on the move so it helps. You don't have to be active to have success on the program. It's up to you.
  • THE RESULTS ARE REAL! No scams or gimmicks here folks. When I talk about the numbers they are 100% correct and accurate. It's true that not everyone will lose weight the same way, but you will lose and be succesful if you stick to the program. That's really all there is to it.
During my meeting with Jan at Herbal One today we also talked about what's coming up next for me on the program. Once I finish with the weight loss portion, then I'll move on to the stabilization portion of the program. This is the part where I'll work to mantain the weight I've acheived. It's part of the process to ensure I don't gain back the weight. This is another impressive part of the program because Herbal One wants to make sure you lose the weight and keep it off. I've actually spoken to a number of people who have had success on different dieting fads in the past, only to gain it back quickly. With Herbal One's help that won't happen to me or to you if you sign up.

I don't mean to make this blog sound like a cheesy infomercial but some of you have called and e-mailed me regarding the different options availible from Herbal One, so let's talk about those.
Everyone has different weight loss goals. Mine is 70lbs. That's quite a large goal and I therefore need the full Herbal One program. If you're someone that wants to lose maybe 20-30 lbs then the 10-week program may be for you. It's only $249.99 and if you want to stay on longer, you can apply that to a full program. Maybe you're someone that just needs to drop 5lbs fast. Herbal One has a 7-day program for $99.99 that will help you out. They also have many great items for sale like meal-replacement bars and protein bars (I'm a big fan of them!) in addition other very healthy supplements you can use.

As always, you can contact Herbal One at 748-9999 to get more info on the program or to schedule a no-hassle consultation to see if the program is for you. Remember Energy listeners get 50% off the program if you sign up by Friday February 15th!!!

You can also contact me if you have any questions at jc.coutts@chumkawartha.ca

Sticking to the program

If you're trying to lose weight, staying on track is vital.

It's been a weekend full of temptation...food temptation.

Friday night the Energy crew participated in the annual Bowl For Kids Sake to support The Big Brothers / Big Sisters of Peterborough. It was an awesome event and I further proved to myself that I really suck at bowling. I was almost beaten by my boss's six-year-old daughter. I pulled out a win by hitting a spare in the last frame. Perhaps doing a victory dance was pushing it...
Kidding aside, after the event the crew headed to Boston Pizza. I stuck with a couple light beers, which is allowed on the program for you guys who may be considering joining Herbal One. The best beer you can drink, since we're on the subject, is Sleeman Clear. You can safely have a couple of these. Sure it lacks in flavour a little, but there's no carbs so it's Herbal One approved!

Saturday night was a tough one too. I'm the backup "promotions announcer" at Peterborough Petes games. Basically, I'm the guy that announces contests during the game and the intermission. The regular guy was off for the night so I was working the game.

While I was at the game I ran into my good friend Ben Lyman who covers Petes games for TV Cogeco as a producer. Ben will be the first to tell you he's the reason I'm in broadcasting because it was him who gave me my first break on TV at the age of 16. It's true! If it hadn't been for him I don't know what I'd be doing for a living. Maybe I'd be the funniest squeegee kid in Ottawa....who knows. Anyway, Ben had invited me to join him and the crew from Cogeco at Jake's after the game. I know those guys work hard cause they built up a hell of an appetite. There was all kinds of great food at Jake's for the crew. I didn't have any however, since I wanted to stick to the program.

A lot of us tend to associate having a good time with friends by eating a lot of food...especially when it's free food. Since I had eaten before I went, I didn't need to eat again, so it wasn't like I was starving myself. Plus, even though I didn't eat with the crew, I still had a great time.

It's ok to cheat a little on the program. In fact, the staff at Herbal One will provide you with many different options of special treats you can have that won't mess up your progress. There's even ice cream on the list!

For me though, I plan to stick to the program 100%...except on Monday nights. That's Mug Club Night at Boston Pizza and I treat myself to Potato Skins that night. It's really the only time I cheat on the program, but I still, somehow, end up losing weight every week.

Tomorrow I begin week 6 on the program. There will be some updated numbers for you then.

Remember, you've got until Friday to sign up and save 50% off the program!

WEEK 4 RESULTS!!!

After four weeks now I'm really a believer in Herbal One and their program.

I was down almost 4lbs from last Monday and I'm now down just over 21lbs in total in just four weeks.

Yes, the program works...but at the same time, I've been working hard on the program. Super Bowl sunday required alot of willpower to stay on program but it paid off. While my friends ate wings and nachos, I stuck with a grilled chicked breast and a couple potato skins. No, the skins arn't really the best choice, but at least I got a bit of a treat so I didn't feel totally left out. It was still a great game and since I stuck to program I got the results I wanted.

One of the things I'm quickly learning about the Herbal One program is that when you go through a lifestyle change like this and your goal is too lose weight (in my case a large amount at 70lbs) you have to be committed and you have to be prepared to be in it for the long haul. It's not a race, it's a marathon. Sure, I'd love to wake up tomorrow morning and be at my goal weight but it ain't gonna happen. However, if I stick to the program, it will. The best things in life are the things you work for, right?

When I was speaking to Jan at Herbal One today she mentioned a lot of Energy listeners have expressed interest in the Herbal One program. Remember that Herbal One designs a program for you. So the program I'm on, likely won't be the same as someone who wants to lose just 10lbs for a vacation. That's why it's important to contact them for a consultation and find something that works for you.

The great thing about this program too is you don't have to count calories. I have no clue how many calories I eat in a day. All I have to do is make sure I get a proper balance of fruit, veggies, dairy, protein and fat. Believe it or not, the days where I don't eat enough are the days I don't lose weight but rather I gain it.

Whatever your goal is, contact Herbal One for a consultation, it's free and there's no pressure to sign up. If you do decide it's for you, Energy listeners will get 50% off the program. You've got until Friday February 15th to take advantage of that offer. You can contact Herbal One at 748-9999 or if you want to ask me about the program just fire me an e-mail.

It's a snow day, so here's some entertainment.

I had another appointment at Herbal One this morning. I won't share the results with you until Monday. As long as I don't pig out on Super Bowl sunday, there should be some good numbers to report on Monday.

In the meantime, because it is a snow day, I've posted a poll and a few videos for you to enjoy to help pass the time without going crazy cause you're snowed in. How crazy? Ever see "The Shining"? I pulled one of those this morning when I had to brush my car off....$(^#ING SNOW!!!

Our first video comes from a media mentor of mine, Rick Mercer.

Leafs fans, see the great things cable TV now offers you.
